Welcome to Year 3's Page!

Class teacher: Miss Rashad

Maths

In Year 3, we develop our mathematical understanding through a combination of practical activities, problem-solving and reasoning. Following the White Rose Maths scheme, children build confidence with place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement and shape.

We encourage children to explain their thinking, make connections between different areas of maths and apply their skills to a range of problems. Alongside developing fluency and accuracy, we aim to nurture confident mathematicians who enjoy exploring and making sense of the world through maths.

English

In Year 3, we develop a love of reading and writing through a rich range of engaging texts and exciting topics. During the autumn term, we use the PVPG approach to develop children’s vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and writing skills.

As the year progresses, we move on to Pathways to Write, where children explore high-quality texts and use them as inspiration for their own writing. Across the year, children have opportunities to write for a range of purposes and audiences, while developing their confidence in reading, discussing, creating and editing their work. We encourage children to become imaginative, thoughtful and enthusiastic readers and writers.

Curriculum

In Year 3, our curriculum topics encourage children to explore the world around them through exciting questions and hands-on learning.

In History, we investigate how Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, explore the impact the Romans had on Britain and consider what the Anglo-Saxons brought to our country.

In Geography, we explore why volcanoes and earthquakes are found together and develop our understanding of the physical processes that shape our planet. We also compare contrasting locations, exploring the similarities and differences between Windermere and Bradford.

Throughout the year, children develop their geographical and historical knowledge while learning to ask questions, examine evidence, make comparisons and explain how and why things have changed.

Science

Science encourages children to be curious about the world around them and to develop their skills as scientists. We explore a range of exciting topics, including Animals Including Humans, Rocks and Fossils, Forces and Magnets, Light and Plants.

Through practical investigations, observations and experiments, children develop their understanding of scientific ideas while learning to ask questions, make predictions, record results and draw conclusions. We encourage children to use scientific vocabulary confidently and to apply their knowledge to explain the world around them.

PE

In Year 3, we do PE on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school in the correct PE kit suitable for indoor and outdoor weather for those two days.

Art & Design Technology

Art and Design and Technology give children opportunities to explore their creativity, develop practical skills and express their ideas in a range of different ways. In Art, children experiment with gestural drawing using charcoal, explore shape through printmaking, stencils and collage, and develop their understanding of colour and texture through cloth, thread and paint. In Design and Technology, children explore textiles by transforming 2D shapes into 3D products and investigate shell structures through designing, making and evaluating their own creations.

Throughout the year, children are encouraged to experiment with materials and techniques, develop their ideas and take pride in creating purposeful and imaginative work.

Homework

Reading

Children are sent home with a new book every Friday. This is the same book they will be reading in school so please ensure it comes back everyday in your child's bookbag. Please support your child by listening to them read their book at least 4 times a week to develop their fluency of reading and sign in their reading record.

TTRS and Morphs

Please ensure that your child goes on Times Tables Rockstars and Morphs at least 4 times a week.
